Teachers Institute 2019
June 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am
The Teachers Institute 2019 will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 9:00-11:30. We will meet at the David Ruggles Center for History and Education located at 225 Nonotuck Street in Florence, MA.
Join fellow educators as we roll out our new curriculum for visiting school groups to the Ruggles Center. We put the same vibrant primary sources used by historians into students’ hands and guide them toward constructing their own narratives. They create short biographies of the compelling figures who gathered in Florence in the 1840s to end slavery and model a social order that worked for everyone. Students then present their findings to their classmates on the very sites where events transpired.
We will sample the curriculum with a short walk near our museum followed by a discussion of how it addresses objectives in the classroom as well as the new State Frameworks. This is an opportunity to meet outside of school and talk about introducing issues of race and equality to students. The session will close with a tour of our newly planted Childs Garden named for a famous abolitionist couple who directed their efforts toward farming in Florence.
This event is hosted by two presenters. Tom Goldscheider will introduce our new curriculum. He regularly leads school groups at the Center and holds an MA in History. Steve Strimer helped found our museum and has done important research on the abolitionist community in Florence. This project is supported by a grant from Mass Humanities.
