About Basil Dorsey:
Basil Dorsey courageously escaped slavery in 1836 and ultimately settled in Florence, MA where he became a pillar of the community. Dorsey, along with other self-emancipated community members, notably stood up to the infamous Fugitive Slave Law in 1850. We celebrate Basil Dorsey annually on the anniversary of his death as his birth date is unknown. His headstone can be found in Park St. Cemetery in Florence which we will visit during the walking tour.
